TONGOGARA SOLAR POWER

Tongogara Solar Power is a renewable energy initiative dedicated to providing reliable and sustainable solar energy solutions to the Tongogara Refugee Camp community in Zimbabwe. Our mission is to alleviate energy poverty by offering affordable, clean, and dependable solar power systems tailored to the unique needs of households, students, and small businesses within the camp.​

The Tongogara Refugee Camp faces significant challenges due to limited access to reliable electricity. This scarcity hampers educational pursuits, restricts economic activities, and affects overall quality of life. By introducing solar power solutions, we aim to:​


Enable students to study after dark with adequate lighting.

Support small businesses and entrepreneurs in operating efficiently.

Reduce reliance on expensive and polluting energy sources.

Enhance access to information and communication technologies.​

Our services include the installation of solar power systems for homes and businesses, provision of energy-efficient lighting solutions, and capacity-building programs to train community members in solar panel maintenance and repair. By empowering the community with sustainable energy, we strive to foster economic growth, improve educational outcomes, and promote environmental stewardship within the Tongogara Refugee Camp

The Tongogara Solar Power project directly addresses the critical issue of energy poverty within the Tongogara Refugee Camp in Zimbabwe. This camp, home to over 17,000 refugees, predominantly lacks access to electricity, with many households disconnected from the national grid. ​

This energy deficit significantly hampers daily life. Students struggle to study after dark due to insufficient lighting, limiting their educational opportunities. Small business owners face challenges operating effectively without reliable energy, stifling economic growth. Additionally, families often rely on expensive and polluting energy sources like kerosene and firewood, which pose health risks and contribute to environmental degradation. ​


The absence of reliable energy also affects access to information and communication technologies, further isolating the community and limiting opportunities for education and economic advancement. Moreover, the lack of lighting increases safety risks, particularly for women

women and girls, who may face dangers when moving around the camp at night. ​


By providing sustainable and reliable solar power solutions, the Tongogara Solar Power project aims to alleviate these challenges. The initiative focuses on delivering solar power systems for homes and businesses, energy-efficient lighting solutions, and training on solar panel maintenance and repair. This approach not only improves the quality of life for the camp's residents but also fosters economic opportunities and promotes sustainable development within the community.
